The Database workshop is the place where you can
fix, backup, restore, and get all information about your database.
Database
Information
This is the first screen you will be presented with. It
contains information about your database and your system.
Compact
As you change data (add or delete entries) in a database ,
the database file can become fragmented and use more disk space than is
necessary.
Periodically, you can use the Compact Database method to
compact your database to defragment the database file. The compacted database
is usually smaller and often runs faster.
Because Compact Database creates a copy of the database, you
must have enough disk space for both the original and the duplicate databases.
The compact operation fails if there isn't enough disk space available.
Repair Repair the Database if you are getting an error
or if the database is acting in a strange way.
This method attempts to repair a database that was marked as
possibly corrupt by an incomplete write operation (e.g.. during scanning a new
CD-Rom). This can occur if the application is closed unexpectedly because of a
power outage or computer hardware problem. The database won't be marked as
possibly corrupt if you quit your application in an usual way.
The Repair Database method also attempts to validate all
system tables and all indexes. Any data that can't be repaired is discarded.
If the database can't be repaired, an error occurs.
Note :- After repairing a database, it's also a good idea to
compact it to defragment the file and to recover disk space.
Backup
This will make a copy of your database to a file named "ngl.bak".
You can restore your database if it becomes corrupt and the repair database
method can't repair it.
Restore
You can restore your database if it becomes corrupt and the
repair database method can't repair it.
This method simply deletes the corrupt database and replaces
it with the file named "ngl.bak". If this file is not available , the
operation fails.
Encrypt /
Decrypt
Encrypting a database compacts the
database file and makes it indecipherable by a utility program or word
processor. Decrypting a database reverses the encryption.
Because Encrypt / Decrypt Database creates a copy of the
database, you must have enough disk space for both the original and the
duplicate databases. The Encrypt / Decrypt operation fails if there isn't
enough disk space available.
Totals
This screen shows you the total number of CDs scanned, files
scanned, directories scanned and total size of all CDs that were scanned.
In rare cases this information can get corrupt, usually if
you were scanning a CD and the computer fails. Although CD Librarian can
handle these situations properly, it can happen. So there are 2 buttons at the
bottom of the screen that allow you to recalculate these totals. Be warned
that this may take a long time if the database has a huge number of scanned
CDs.
